About the Ooty Flower Show
The Ooty Flower Show began in 1896, organised by the Nilgiri Agricultural Society under the chairmanship of Collector J.H. Tremenhere. The Tamil Nadu government took over its management in 1980, and the centenary edition was celebrated in 1995. Today it is widely considered the largest flower show in South India. What makes the show remarkable is the scale:

The Botanical Garden itself is a 55-acre, 1848-established estate, originally laid out by Scottish horticulturist William Graham McIvor (trained at the Royal Botanical Gardens, London). Even outside Flower Show week, the garden hosts around 1,000 species of plants, ferns, and trees.

Floral Sculptures and Theme Models
The signature attraction. Each year exhibitors create giant flower-built sculptures – animals, birds, national monuments, and symbolic compositions – made entirely from living blooms. Past themes have included replicas of the Taj Mahal, peacocks in full plume, and Indian heritage motifs.
Cut Flower Exhibition
Hundreds of individual flower varieties shown in cut form: roses, dahlias, anthuriums, birds of paradise, carnations, chrysanthemums, gladioli, and rare highland species you won’t see in city florists.
Flower Rangoli and Floral Carpets
Intricate geometric patterns in flower petals, plus sections of lawn covered in dense flower plantings – photographed every year and a favourite for visitors.
Bonsai Gallery
The Nilgiris has an active bonsai community, and the Flower Show display is regarded as one of the better bonsai exhibitions in South India.
Vegetable & Fruit Carvings
Highland produce shown at unusual scale (oversized cauliflowers, carrots, etc.), plus intricate sculptures carved from vegetables.
Indian & Japanese Flower Arrangements
Traditional ikebana alongside Indian arrangement styles, often demonstrated live by visiting practitioners.

Ticket Prices & How to Book
Based on 2025 fees – 2026 fees expected to be similar:

Outside Flower Show days, the regular Botanical Garden entry is Rs 50 (adults) and Rs 30 (children).

Tickets are valid for the full day – re-entry is permitted, so you can step out for lunch and return. Counter tickets are available at the gate but expect 1-2 hour queues on opening weekend.

The Government Rose Garden is especially worth pairing with the Flower Show – it has 20,000+ rose varieties, and the show period is when the maximum number bloom together. It’s a separate venue, about 2 km from the Botanical Garden.
How to Reach Ooty for the Flower Show
From Coimbatore (85 km, 3-4 hours)
Coimbatore is the most popular entry point. The drive is scenic, climbing through Mettupalayam, the 36 hairpin bends of the Nilgiri Ghat Road, and Coonoor before reaching Ooty. From Bangalore (295 km, 7-8 hours)
The most common Bangalore route is via Mysore-Gundlupet-Bandipur-Gudalur. Allow a full day if you’re driving direct.
By Train
The nearest major railway station is Mettupalayam (40 km from Ooty). From Mettupalayam you can catch the famous Nilgiri Mountain Railway up to Ooty – a UNESCO World Heritage scenic ride – or hire a cab.
By Air
Coimbatore International Airport (CJB) is the nearest, about 85 km from Ooty. Bengaluru Airport (BLR) is the next closest at 295 km.
Important: vehicle restrictions during the show
On Flower Show days, vehicles are stopped about 1 km from the Botanical Garden entrance. You’ll walk the last kilometre – the road is lined with flower stalls and temporary shops, so it’s a pleasant approach. Plan extra time, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Visitor Tips – How to Get the Most from the Flower Show
- Visit on opening day, weekday morning. The displays are freshest, the crowd is thinnest. Aim for 9:00-11:00 AM on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Avoid the weekend if you can. Saturday and Sunday draw the bulk of the 3 lakh visitors.
- Allow 4-5 hours at the garden. The Botanical Garden is 55 acres on terraced slopes – serious gardeners and photographers may need 6 hours.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes. Plus a light jacket – Ooty in May is 15-25 degrees C, cool in the morning.
- Book hotels well in advance. Flower Show week is the busiest of the year in Ooty.
- Pair with the Rose Show at the Government Rose Garden – they typically run in the same week and the rose blooms peak at exactly that time.
- Carry water and snacks. Food stalls exist but get crowded by midday.
